Ketamine for PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition in which an individual experiences or witnesses a traumatic event that is beyond a typical stressor and experiences behavioral, psychological, and mood symptoms because of the trauma. PTSD affects approximately 10% of the U.S. adult population and can happen when someone is exposed to serious injury, sexual violation, and the threat of death or injury.

Symptoms of PTSD

Common symptoms of PTSD include intrusive memories, flashbacks, reliving the trauma, nightmares, avoidance behaviors, changes in mood, irritability, blaming oneself for the trauma, anger outburst, increased startle response, feeling on edge and hyperalert, trouble concentrating, loss of emotional control, depression, and disrupted sleep.

PTSD is a debilitating condition that can seriously impact daily functioning, relationships, and social interactions.  PTSD can also make it difficult for a person to maintain occupational functioning.

Traditional Treatments for PTSD

There are limited medication treatments available for PTSD. Typically, oral antidepressants are used and sometimes anticonvulsants, second-generation antipsychotics, and antihypertensive agents (such as prazosin or propranolol) are considered.

How Ketamine Treats PTSD

  • Ketamine for PTSD works by tapping into our inner healing intelligence, which is our innate ability to process and heal through trauma.  This type of healing process addresses the root cause of the symptoms, instead of numbing or covering up the symptoms.

  • Ketamine therapy for PTSD allows the mind to explore ways to health from trauma without the avoidance and hyperarousal that is a typically seen in PTSD.

  • Ketamine treatments stimulates the mind to see things from a new perspective and allows us to redefine the relationship between the individual and the trauma experience.

  • Research studies indicate that ketamine therapy can significantly and rapidly reduce symptoms of PTSD.

  • Ketamine therapy is a newer and innovative treatment option for patients with PTSD.
